Luminary Launches BeFit Program

New habits are hard to start and harder to stick with, but what if we could decrease the number of steps between our team and good habits?

Continuous improvement is something that we are always striving for at Luminary, especially when it comes to making our team members feel supported and energised at work and in their personal lives. Luminary is now in its 25th year of operation, and we are still looking for ways to introduce initiatives that are going to help our team balance their mental and physical health.

The BeFit program was an idea that came about when our team returned to work in January, ready for the year ahead. We did a Friday training session on James Clear’s Atomic Habits book and methodology, revisiting and discussing the power of goals and the systems that help us achieve them. In particular, I was struck by this quote from James Clear;

“Before you try to increase your willpower, try to decrease the friction in your environment. Decrease the number of steps between you and your good habits.”

This is something I knew to be true in my own life, and so I considered how Luminary could address the friction our team could be facing when it came to investing in their mental and physical health.

Financial reasons can often be a point of friction when it comes to pursuing a new goal or interest, and I knew this was something that Luminary could potentially address on some level.

Decreasing the number of steps between our team and good habits

To assist the team with creating fewer steps between them and their fitness habits, Luminary is providing AUD$200 (2 million rupiah for our Indonesian team) towards the entry fee into an organised fitness event, towards a gym membership or even for fitness equipment. An organised event might be a run, long walk, cycling, triathlon or swimming event.

The BeFit program is specifically designed to help our team take action into registering for an event or sign up to a program that challenges you to train. As the moment you register you need to start building habits that support your training so that you can complete the event.

We’re excited to offer this program and thrilled to see that our team have already grabbed this opportunity with both hands. Here’s what they had to say.

The BeFit program is just one of the many amazing things about Luminary's culture that still keeps me here after 8.5 years. I had been toying with the idea of doing a trail ultramarathon for a couple of years and this program has given me that little push I needed to turn my secret aspiration into an actual goal. All things going to plan, I will be trekking my way through 50kms of spectacular wilderness in the Gold Coast hinterland in late August!
After suffering a long and enduring run of post-covid fatigue, the Luminary BeFit program gave me the kick I needed to get back into my daily routine of the gym, daily walks and healthy eating. My short-term goal was to restore my vitality, and I’ve already surpassed that with high levels of energy and enthusiasm. It’s great working in an environment where we’re genuinely rewarded for looking after ourselves.
After recovering from two consecutive years of knee surgery, getting involved in Luminary’s BeFit program gave me the impetus to get back to daily bike rides to the office. The culture at Luminary is very supportive and we love to get behind an initiative!
I was inspired by our resident running legend, Tony Duan, and the other BeFit participants to take on a marathon as part of the program. This involved more running than I've ever done, a lot of pain, soreness, and tiredness! But the result was a marathon that I finished, a much fitter Adam, and the marathon bug that will mean more races in the near future...

Of course, there are limits to the BeFit program… darts and beers will not be eligible, but we hope to see each of our team members create new habits outside of their comfort zone and get to the starting line!

"Whenever you want to change your behaviour, you can simply ask yourself: How can I make it obvious? How can I make it attractive? How can I make it easy? How can I make it satisfying?" - James Clear.
